Ekurhuleni youth engage in annual water education programme
The Department of Water and Sanitation will run its annual Water and Sanitation Education Programme in Ekurhuleni.
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) will host its annual Water and Sanitation Education Programme (WSEP) in Ekurhuleni from October 5 to 11, aimed at inspiring the next generation of leaders in the sector.
The programme raises awareness among learners about efficient water use, resource protection, health, hygiene, and the impact of invasive alien plants.
Through interactive activities, participants gain the knowledge and skills needed to shape the future of South Africa’s water and sanitation sector.
Classrooms are transformed into hubs of water literacy, where learners explore careers in the water sector and develop practical problem-solving skills.
Through hands-on projects, students and educators investigate challenges, brainstorm creative solutions, and implement initiatives within their schools and communities.

The WSEP includes initiatives such as Baswa Le Meetse (Youth in Water), Aqua Enduro, public speaking competitions, curriculum support, intervention projects, career promotion, and the celebration of key water-related observances.
At the conclusion of the programme, outstanding learners are awarded full study bursaries, opening doors to science and engineering careers in water and sanitation.
DWS spokesperson Wisane Mavasa said the programme has already produced young leaders making meaningful contributions across the sector.
“Some of our previous winners have gone on to study for PhDs, travel internationally, and participate in a range of water and sanitation initiatives. This programme offers disadvantaged learners an opportunity to explore all possibilities,” she said.
Mavasa added that the WSEP reminds both pupils and teachers that South Africa’s water is precious, empowering young leaders to protect the nation’s most essential resource.
