Ekurhuleni cracks down on illegal tyre-burning syndicate in Brakpan

Officials found hundreds of tyres ready to be illegally burnt for scrap wire.

The City of Ekurhuleni’s environmental management inspectors (EMIs), together with provincial EMIs and law enforcement, recently dismantled a tyre-burning syndicate in Brakpan.

According to the CoE, nearly 300 tyres were found ready to be burnt to extract scrap wire. The city reminds the community that burning tyres is illegal as it pollutes the environment and harms public health.

It is also warned that vehicles used in such crimes will be impounded. Residents can report illegal dumping or tyre-burning to the city’s call centre on 0860 543 000.
