Help restore Brakpan’s 1922 Miners Strike Memorial this weekend
Join a community clean-up at a historic Brakpan memorial. Bring gloves, gardening tools, and refuse bags to help restore this important piece of local history.
Members of the public are invited to take part in a clean-up of a historic Brakpan memorial site this Saturday (November 15).
As reported in the October 24 edition of the Brakpan Herald, the site, which commemorates local mine officials and special police who lost their lives during the 1922 Rand Revolt, has fallen into ruin.
It’s deplorable condition was discovered during the demolition of the Plastic City informal settlement.
The revolt, also referred to as the Rand Rebellion or 1922 Miners Strike, saw violent clashes in Brakpan, with homes, shops, and the mine attacked, resulting in the deaths of mine officials, special police, and miners.
The memorial site, located just off Main Reef Road, once served as a place of remembrance for these individuals, but decades of neglect and criminal activity have left it damaged and littered with debris.
The clean-up starts at 09:00, and volunteers are encouraged to wear gloves and closed-toe shoes. A TLB will be available for heavy lifting, but volunteers are requested to bring along refuse bags, as well as gardening tools such as spades, rakes and weed eaters, if available.
Those unable to assist physically can support the project by bringing refreshments or offering moral support.
