Brakpan crime stats 2025/26: Major drops in property crime but kidnappings spike
While overall reported crimes dropped, the station still appeared in provincial and national top 30 categories.
The latest crime statistics, covering the first and second quarters of the 2025/26 financial year, were released on November 28.
The first quarter covers April to June, and the second quarter covers July to September.
Brakpan’s crime statistics show strong declines in property-related crimes across both quarters, but concerning spikes in kidnapping, crimen injuria, carjackings and attempted murder.
First quarter
The local police station featured on the Gauteng provincial top 30 list in several categories and the national top 30 list in four categories:
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere: position 29
• Arson: position 29
• Burglary at residential premises: position 28
• Contact sexual offences: position 6. The station is also 30th nationally in this category.
• Crimen injuria: position 12. There was an increase from three cases the previous year to 24.
• Culpable homicide: position seven. The station is also 26th nationally in this category.
• Kidnapping: position 22. The station is 23rd nationally in this category.
• Other serious crime: position 30
• Robbery at non-residential premises: position 30
• Truck hijacking: position 14. The station is 15th nationally in this category.
The full first quarter stats for Brakpan are as follows and are compared to the same time period as the previous year:
Contact crimes (crimes against a person)
• Murder decreased from seven cases the previous year to one.
• Sexual offences decreased from 23 to 14.
• Attempted murder remained the same at eight cases.
• Assault GBH decreased from 22 to 18.
• Common assault decreased from 65 to 46.
• Common robbery increased from five to eight.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances increased from 66 to 91.
Total contact crimes decreased from 196 to 186.

Sexual offences
• Rape decreased from 16 cases the previous year to nine.
• Sexual assault decreased from six to three.
• Attempted sexual offences remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Contact sexual offences increased from one to two.

• Carjacking increased from 17 cases the previous year to 22.
• Robbery at residential premises increased from nine to 12.
• Robbery at non-residential premises remained the same at 10 cases
• Trio crime increased from 36 to 44.
• Robbery of cash-in-transit vehicle remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Bank robbery remained the same and no cases were reported.
• Truck hijacking increased from no cases to six.
Contact-related crimes
• Arson increased from no cases to one.
• Malicious damage to property decreased from 41 to 33.
Total contact-related crimes decreased from 41 to 34.
Property-related crimes
• Burglary at non-residential premises decreased from 27 cases the previous year to 13.
• Burglary at residential premises decreased from 88 to 66.
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decreased from 85 to 36.
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle decreased from 40 to 35.
• Stock theft decreased from one case to none.
Total property-related crimes decreased from 241 to 150.

• All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased from 182 cases the previous year to 152.
• Commercial crime increased from 99 to 101.
• Shoplifting decreased from 46 to 30.
Total other serious crimes decreased from 327 to 283. 17 community reported serious crimes decreased from 805 to 653.
Crime detected as a result of police action
• Illegal possession of firearms and ammunition decreased from seven cases the previous year to five.
• Drug-related crime decreased from 128 to 110.
• Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs increased from 46 to 56.
• Sexual offences detected as a result of police remained the same and no cases were reported.
Total crime detected as a result of police action decreased from 181 to 171.
• Kidnapping increased from 10 cases the previous year to 33.
Second quarter
Brakpan SAPS again featured on the national and provincial top 30 lists in some categories.
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere: position 24 in Gauteng.
• Crimen injuria: position six in Gauteng and 17th nationally. There was an increase from five cases the previous year to 48.
• Robbery at non-residential premises: position 13 in Gauteng and 29th nationally.
• Truck hijacking: position 27 in Gauteng.

• Murder increased from six cases the previous year to nine.
• Sexual offences decreased from 21 to 14.
• Attempted murder increased from nine to 19.
• Assault GBH decreased from 39 to 28.
• Common assault increased from 63 to 65.
• Common robbery increased from 14 to 21.
• Robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased from 88 to 81.
Total contact crimes decreased from 240 to 237.

• Malicious damage to property increased from 38 to 41.

• Burglary at non-residential premises decreased from 39 cases the previous year to 12.
• Burglary at residential premises decreased from 71 to 55.
• Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle decreased from 53 to 42.
• Theft out of or from motor vehicle increased from 39 to 42.
• Stock theft remained the same and no cases were reported.
Total property-related crimes decreased from 202 to 151.
Other serious crimes
• All theft not mentioned elsewhere decreased from 195 cases the previous year to 167.
• Commercial crime decreased from 127 to 115.
• Shoplifting increased from 26 to 33.
