Crime awareness campaign focuses on truck hijackings
The awareness campaign was aimed at alerting motorists, especially truck drivers, about criminal activity on the R23 and R554.
Brakpan SAPS acting station commander, Colonel Robert Makopo, flanked by other law enforcement officers, conducted an awareness campaign on the R23 and R554 roads on January 22.
Through the campaign, they aimed to alert motorists about crime trends along these roads, including smash-and-grab incidents and car and truck hijackings.
Accompanying him was Vispol support head Lieutenant Colonel Pearl van Staad, Captain Nape Magane, Firearms, Liquor and Second Hand Goods Control (FLASH) members, the sector manager, and CPF members.
“While the awareness included all motorists, the campaign focused on truck drivers because of the latest increase in truck hijacking incidents along these routes,” said Brakpan SAPS Sector 1 manager and corporate communications officer, Constable Audrey Buthelezi.
“Truck drivers received pamphlets with tips on how to avoid falling prey to hijackers, were reminded to rest at safe places, and to always have emergency numbers on speed dial to report any suspicious activities on the road,” she said.
“The motorists were thankful for the awareness and appreciated the initiative, with most feeling safe on the road when they noticed the presence of the SAPS.”
