SAPS, community partners target school safety in Brakpan

Brakpan SAPS conducted a school search led by Constable Audrey Buthelezi, highlighting ongoing efforts to remove dangerous and prohibited items from classrooms.

Brakpan police and other stakeholders conducted a search at a local high school on February 9 as part of the SAPS Safer Schools Campaign.

The campaign is focused on eliminating lawlessness, preventing gangsterism and bullying, supporting learners and educators, and ensuring safety at schools.

Brakpan SAPS communications officer and Sector 1 manager Constable Audrey Buthelezi led the team, which comprised CPF members, Siyabangena Patrollers, and members of the Bold and Brave Youth Foundation.

Parade was held at the police station and conducted by Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo, who was supported by Vispol support head Lieutenant Colonel Pearl van Staad.

“During a school search, the school identifies challenging classes and they will be searched. Any illicit item found in the classroom or on a learner is confiscated by the police,” said Buthelezi.

At the school, five classes were identified and about 60 learners were searched.

“The educators are always present when learners are searched, and we always explain why we are taking away any item deemed unfit for a learner to possess,” said Buthelezi.

Items confiscated on the day included vapes and cigarettes, sharp scissors, playing cards and knives. Buthelezi explained that blunt-tipped scissors are recommended to be used by learners.

Playing cards are confiscated to prevent gambling, which, according to Buthelezi, can lead to negative consequences including academic failure, loss of interest in extracurricular activities, social isolation, and family disconnection.

“These are only some of the items that are found on learners during school searches. Several items are prohibited and considered to be dangerous for a learning environment,” she said.

“As much as schools and law enforcement prioritise school safety, emphasis on the rules and responsibilities is extended to parents and learners.

“The SAPS will continue working together with the schools to ensure safety and security within learning institutions.”
