Clean Brakpan’s ‘blikkie skud’ brings welcome relief
The group temporarily halted operations after exhausting its funds, but a weekend fundraiser has provided some relief.
After its funds were depleted, Clean Brakpan was recently forced to temporarily halt clean-up operations in the town.
The organisation then appealed to residents for donations to sustain its work in keeping Brakpan cleaner, and held a “blikkie skud” fundraiser at the Mall@Carnival intersection on February 15.
The team had just completed cleanup efforts along Prince George Avenue using its remaining funds, warning that without additional donations, further work would not be possible.
According to Clean Brakpan, it costs approximately R7 000 per week to operate its team. Expenses include wages, petrol, and repairs to equipment and machinery.

Residents were encouraged to contribute to ensure that clean-up operations could continue.
On Sunday, the organisation raised about R3 800 during the fundraiser, which will go towards continued cleaning efforts.
The team returned to the intersection on February 17 between 16:00 and 18:00 for a second collection drive. Freedom Front Plus PR councillor Riaan van Zyl thanked residents for their support.
“Brakpan, it doesn’t matter what we face; we stand together. The blikkie skud was a success for one reason. You, the Brakpan community,” he said.
“You are the real heroes of this town. I will never give up on Brakpan for any other community.”
