Letter: Brakpan is more than just memes

According to a disappointed resident, Brakpan Chronicles focused on stereotypes, ignored the heart of the town, and handed critics more fuel to ridicule Brakpan.

“Long-time Brakpan resident” writes:

I am highly disappointed in the Showmax documentary Brakpan Chronicles. It not only degraded our town, but it was insulting on a whole other level.

Are there fights? Yes. Are they sketchy areas? Of course!

However you get that wherever you go in our country, in fact anywhere in the world. The documentary was solely focused on the so-called “rough” hangouts.

They carefully selected who they would interview in order to further intensify the mockery of our town.

They threw out the Brakpan memes like candy. Some of the most amazing people I know live in Brakpan.

We are a solid community, and whenever you go in this world every town will have its bad apples. Take a trip through Benoni CBD and see the difference.

We are a great town and I think the way Rian Van Heerden depicted us was a complete and utter disgrace.

What he has done, will now only give people more ammunition to mock Brakpan. It’s sad that people do this for views and money. Brakpan, you are awesome.
