‘Swimming pool’ pothole fixed in hours, others linger for years

Two residents raise the alarm over gaping potholes and unresponsive service from the City of Ekurhuleni, with vastly different outcomes.

Two Brakpan residents recently contacted the Brakpan Herald on the same day about service delivery failures in the town.

While one potholed road was fixed within hours, another remains riddled with craters. On February 25, Petro Fourie, who lives in a complex along Van der Westhuizen Street in Dalview, contacted the Herald regarding a wide pothole that she described as a swimming pool.

Her description was fairly accurate, as the hole measured roughly 1m by 1.5m to 2m. She subsequently reported that a few hours later, all the potholes on the road had been repaired.

Meanwhile, Louw Erasmus, who lives at the corner of Bakkes and Smily streets in Brenthurst, contacted the Herald because he is having no luck getting potholes or street lights repaired.

He has been reporting the potholes on this particular corner, as well as the non-functioning street lights along the entire block of Bakkes Street.

According to him, his reports have gone unanswered, some for up to three years now. It seems that complaints with reference numbers are frequently closed with the municipality claiming the work is complete.

It is claimed that one of the potholes originated from the City of Ekurhuleni digging up a part of the road to fix a burst pipe.

“I have contacted councillors and put it on the Brenthurst group and made reports, but nothing happens. They say it was fixed, but the lights on Bakkes Road are still dead,” Erasmus said.

“They replaced the old lights with new LED lights, but they don’t even work. The nine potholes on the corner of Bakkes and Smily just get bigger every day,” he explained.

Comment was requested from the city regarding these issues on February 25, but none had been received at the time of publication.
