Brakpan SAPS joins community outreach initiatives to promote safety and social upliftment

Over the weekend, Brakpan police joined local initiatives including a homelessness awareness event and a feeding scheme reaching about 200 women and children.

Brakpan police, represented by social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, participated in different community engagements over the past weekend.

“The main objective of the participation was to tell community members that SAPS is not only for their safety and security but also to uplift and support them,” said Buthelezi.

The first engagement was on June 5 at Tutela Family Care Brakpan for the organisation’s “Sleep in a Box” initiative aimed at raising awareness about homelessness.

Buthelezi was among those who slept in a box throughout the night, an experience intended to encourage privileged participants to appreciate what they have and not overlook the struggles of the underprivileged.

The second community engagement was on June 7 at the Mkhancwa informal settlement in Maryvlei.

Buthelezi supported a local NPO, The Bold and Brave Youth Foundation, in its mission to bring smiles to children and women through small acts of kindness aimed at restoring hope for a better future.

The foundation’s young adults fed about 200 women and children with a warm meal cooked with love.

Buthelezi highlighted the importance of community engagement in the SAPS’ efforts to combat crime and improve public safety.

She listed the following reasons:

  • Direct impact on crime prevention: Individuals can directly influence their communities’ safety and security when they work with the police.
  • Resource and support for community projects: The SAPS can provide support to community initiatives, enhancing their effectiveness.
  • Building safer communities: The engagements help foster positive relationships and promote safety and security awareness.
  • Strengthening service delivery: The partnership strategy mobilises stakeholders to improve service delivery.
  • Addressing crime root causes: This helps SAPS to understand the root causes of crime, which is essential for effective policing strategies that resonate with community needs.

“The impact of SAPS on the community is multifaceted, involving both positive contributions to safety and security, as well as significant challenges that diminish their effectiveness and community trust,” said Buthelezi.

“In order to enhance the impact, SAPS focuses on rebuilding trust with communities, ensuring accountability, improving responsiveness, and fostering more robust community partnerships.”
