Multi-agency operation clamps down on crime in Brakpan

Increased visibility and coordinated action by law enforcement led to arrests for drugs, drunk driving and illegal trading.

A high density operation, forming part of Ekurhuleni East District’s Operation Shanela 2, saw an influx of law enforcers on the streets of Brakpan over the past weekend.

The operation started at 18:00 on March 28 and continued until the early hours of the morning.

Brakpan SAPS Vispol commander Colonel Robert Makopo was flanked by Captain Nape Magane when he conducted the parade at the grounds of Carnival City.

The parade was attended by SAPS members from other East sub-district stations, the SAPS K9 Unit, EMPD, CPF, private security companies, National Traffic Police, and AfriForum members.

“The operation is part of unceasing endeavours to fight lawlessness within the Brakpan precinct, whereby an alliance of law enforcement agencies is formed with the intention to challenge criminality,” said Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer, Constable Audrey Buthelezi.

“During the operation, a roadblock was conducted along Springs Road to monitor and enforce traffic laws, check for illegal activities, and ensure road safety.”

Buthelezi explained that the Flash Unit (Firearms Liquor and Second Hand Goods Control) was deployed to address compliance of liquor outlets and second-hand goods dealers.

“The crime prevention battalions, together with the K9 Unit members, addressed crime dependent on police action, and the saturation team ensured that identified hot spots, shopping complexes, petrol stations, and ATMs, including residential areas and other businesses, receive the full presence of law enforcement officers to prevent any illicit activities,” said Buthelezi.

“Motor vehicles, premises, and people were searched at the roadblock, and during stop-and-search actions. Motor vehicles were tested, and AARTO fines were issued. Arrests were effected, for possession of drugs, drunk driving, illegal immigration, and selling liquor without a liquor licence.”

The high visibility of law enforcement officers within the precinct is the SAPS’ proactive measure to crime prevention.

“The operation reflects the SAPS’ commitment to combating crime and enhancing public safety,” added Buthelezi.
