The City of Ekurhuleni has condemned the illegal dumping of medication, following a recent incident in Brakpan.

As reported in last week’s Brakpan Herald, a truck was allegedly seen dumping several dozen cardboard boxes containing packets of the hypertension medication Enalapril Arya in the former Plastic City informal settlement on the evening of September 7.

Arya Pharma, the producer of the medication, told the Brakpan Herald it could not comment on whether the medication was stolen, as it is still trying to verify the batch numbers and expiry dates.

SAPS and the EMPD attended the scene, as illegal dumping is a by-law matter the EMPD handles. The area was cleaned and the medication properly disposed of.

A City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson said environmental health practitioners reported the case and that the police are involved.

“The police and our environmental health practitioners are currently conducting investigations,” he said.

“The city condemns this practice as it is illegal and puts the lives of innocent people at risk. We hope that the investigations will be sped up and those found to be responsible dealt with with accordingly.”

Concerns were raised on the origin of the medication, but Dlamini assures the public that the dumped medication did not originate from the city’s clinics.
