Local panel beater ‘swindled’ pensioners

Motorists should be aware that these things happen.

Disgruntled pensioner writes by email:

I recently had an unpleasant encounter with a local panel beater. We were the victims of a hit-and-run driver who smashed into our car and sped away from the scene, leaving us with thousands of rands in damage to our car.

In good faith we took our car into a local panel beater for repairs. We were initially very happy with the work done, but a few days after taking delivery of our car, we had trouble starting it.

On further investigation, and much to our dismay, we found that the battery had been switched with a very old and useless one of a different make.

When we visited the company, to our horror, the owner refused to take responsibility for the error leaving us with a further R700 to find.

Not only did the young driver of the other vehicle get off scot-free, we were also “ripped off” by the person we trusted to repair our car as well.

Motorists should be aware that these things happen. Take a photograph of your battery if possible and check your car thoroughly before leaving a service provider. It is in your best interest.
