Young golfers learn the ropes

Youngsters are improving their golf game at Royal Oak Country Club.

About 80 young golfers are having the time of their lives and improving their golf game at the same time, with Royal Oak Country Club’s golf director and club professional Kenneth Dube.

The local professional runs the Kenneth Dube Golf Academy at the club, which also caters for underprivileged children from areas like KwaThema and Tsakane, who may never have had the opportunity to play the sport.

“This programme aims to develop the young golfers in our area and get them playing enough golf so that they can become competitors,” said Dube.

The children practise at Royal Oak every Saturday and some days during the work week.

“Golf keeps them (especially teenagers) off the streets, because they can spend a few hours playing golf far away from their problems,” said Dube.

“I really love working with the children and the club is growing because of our development programme.

“You never know who could be the next Tiger Woods.”

Sandile Mahlangu (9), who participates in the programme, said that he enjoys being coached by Dube.

“He teaches me about my grip, aim and driving,” he said.
