Shelley achieves at high speeds
Anthony Shelley (17), a Grade 10 pupil at Hoërskool Volkskool, had good weekend of racing on November 1 and 2.
Shelley took part in the last round of the National Superbike Championship and the penultimate round of the Northern Regional Championship.
He competed in the 600cc Supersport event on his KMSA/Brooke Refrigeration o ZX6 Kawasaki and, for the first time he competed in the 1 000cc super stock class on a Brooke Refrigeration ZX10 Kawasaki.
During Friday practise he was the fastest in the 600cc class and third fastest on the 1 000cc.
On Saturday morning, during qualifying, he encountered gear lever problems and only qualified in 17th place in the 600 national class.
In heat one of the 600cc class, Shelley started from 17th position and made it up to third place, only to encounter gear lever problems again.
This forced him to complete the last three laps in only sixth gear, yet he still managed to maintain third position.
In the second heat of the 600cc class, he again started from 17th place, but managed to take the lead by the third lap.
He held this position until the end and managed to win by three seconds, ahead of Lance Isaacs on a Kawasaki and Cam Peterson on a MV Augusta.
This result gave him the overall second position in the 600cc class for the day and a final position of fifth in the Supersport Championship for 2013.
In the 1000cc national class he qualified in sixth place.
In heat one of the 1000cc class he rode a very good race to come in third place.
In the second heat he encountered tyre problems but battled it out in the last two laps to finish in sixth place which gave him third place overall for the day in the 1000cc class.
In the Regional 600cc class Shelley won both heats by a large margin.
With one round left to go in this class he now has a 100 point lead, making him the 2013 Northern Regions champion.
