UJ Rautels a solid replacement

After the match-up that was scheduled to be played by the Valke's Vodacom Cup team against the third best community club team in the country, Brakpan Rugby Club, on Saturday, was cancelled, it was the University of Johannesburg’s (UJ) Rautels team who made a last minute trip to Brakpan.

Brakpan coach Regardt Botha used this match to assess his options and player combinations for the upcoming Cell C Community Cup, that gets underway for the “Panne” on Saturday, March 8, when they travel to Wellington, in Boland, to take on Roses United at Pelican Stadium.

Brakpan were made to work hard in the match by their visitors, and their players were required to dig deep in order to secure a 31-24 victory.

The half-time score was 7-5 in favour of UJ, who held off a number of powerful drives from the Brakpan forwards in the first period.

Shortly before the end, the scores were locked at 24-24, before Brakpan went over for the winning try.

Captain Bones Robbertse, Wickus van den Bergh and Gido Horn were some of the standout players for the home team.
