Try-fest at Bosman Stadium

A fabulous and effective team effort from Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV resulted in the demolition of Vereeniging, at Bosman Stadium, on Saturday.

The Panne’s second game of the Valke Peregrine League proved to be a complete and utter rout, as the home team went over the Vereeniging try-line on 13 occasions, with 11 different players getting their names on the score sheet.

The home team won the match by a hefty score line of 83-9.

Vereeniging offered some resistance within the first 10 minutes of the encounter, but that was all that they could muster, as the floodgates opened and Brakpan found a good rhythm.

Lock-forward Dean van der Merwe continued his recent good run of form and was again one of the stars for Brakpan, while his partner in the second row and team captain Francois “Bones” Robbertse rolled back the years.

Former Namibian international Jacques Nieuwenhuis returned to the Brakpan starting XV and was one of the Brakpan players who scored a try on the day.

Scrumhalf Shaun Botes, playing his first match of the season, also impressed at Bosman Stadium.

“The Green Machine is running at full strength again and we are very happy with the club’s performances this weekend,” said Brakpan Rugby Club chairman, Harry Nieuwenhuis.

“With the exception of our u-21 side, all the teams won their games.”

The chairman also praised van der Merwe, Vernon du Preez, Neil van der Walt and Tinus Uckerman for excellent displays on the park.

“Injured players like Theo Mynhardt, Theo Bekker, Wikus van den Berg and Franco Booysen should all be back on the training field this coming week,” he said.

Brakpan’s try-scorers were Mathews Mtshali (two), Thinus Ueckermann (two), Shaun Rheeder, Dean van der Merwe, Dirk van Wyk, Vernon du Preez, Mathew Boylan, Jason Arundel, Jacques Nieuwenhuis, Wesley Pretorius and Ronnie Roets.

The team will travel to Orkney to play Vaal Reefs on Saturday, and will be hoping to keep the good form going in the league.
