Close shave in Orkney

After the 83-9 demolition of Vereeniging by Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV, on Saturday, May 17, the team travelled to Orkney to take on Vaal Reefs, in a Valke Peregrine League fixture, on Saturday.

The team seemed to be continuing in the same vein when they went up 17-0 in the early stages of the encounter.

Despite the “Panne” going over the opposition try-line on five occasions, they almost let their efforts slip as Vaal Reefs dug in deep to nearly steal the win from the much-fancied away team.

As the game was nearing its conclusion Vaal Reefs were just one point behind Brakpan with the score at 22-21, and an injection of big-name players Wikus van der Berg and Theo Mynhardt, from the reserves bench, helped to secure victory for Brakpan, as the match ended on 27-21.

Brakpan’s try-scorers against Vaal Reefs were Franco Booysen (two), Ronald Botes, Theo Mynhardt and Shaun Botes.

An evident lack of consistency should be concerning for the Bosman Stadium-based club, as the always dangerous Boksburg and Springs teams stand in their path over the next two weekends.

Brakpan will play Boksburg away from home, at Prince George Park, on Saturday.

The next two league fixtures are absolutely crucial in the race to qualify for next year’s Cell C Community Cup.
