Wrestlers rake in the medals

Brakpan Wrestling Club has kicked off 2015 with a bang.

This past weekend 21 Brakpan wrestlers participated in the annual Hansie Naude Championships in Primrose, where the club placed first overall.

The club’s wrestlers raked in 11 gold medals, two silver medals and two bronze medals.

This year looks to be a big year for the club starting with their sixth annual Brakpan Challenge on Saturday, May 30.

The challenge will be held at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre and looks to once again be one of the year’s biggest club tournaments with wrestlers coming from as far as Kwa-Zulu Natal to participate.

Another big event in wrestling this year is the SA Cadet and Senior tournament on July 3 and July 4.

The tournament is the highlight of the wrestling calendar and wrestlers travel from far afield for a chance to take home the gold and earn their South African colours.

“Brakpan Wrestling club is honoured to have been chosen to host this huge tournament here at our own Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre, and our wrestlers will be training hard, many of them hoping to take a consecutive title to add to their growing list,” said club secretary Gussie Bartlett.

Practice will take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6pm to 8pm with an addition of Monday evening sessions in the run-up to the SA Championships.

Practice takes place at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre (Hall D), and any interested parties can contact Gussie Bartlett on 082 337 2944 for more information.
