‘Panne’ win it in the first half

Brakpan Rugby Club’s first XV enjoyed one of the most dominant first halves of rugby in recent memory, when they led 45-5 before the break, against rivals Springs, on Saturday, June 27.

Club chairman Harry Nieuwenhuis described it as “some of the best rugby I have seen us play against Springs in a long time”.

The domination of the first half, at Bosman Stadium, was not, however, to be continued in the second 40-minute period, as Brakpan failed to score a single point, while their opposition would add 21 points to their tally.

“It seemed as if our players, after a couple of changes, lost concentration in the second half,” added Nieuwenhuis.

“We should have made it 100 points.”

Despite the differing first and second halves the “Panne” are well on track in their pursuit of 2016 Cell C Community Cup rugby.

They are yet to be defeated in the Valke Peregrine League this year, and a home semi-final at Bosman Stadium is all but certain to happen (the team that wins the Peregrine final will automatically qualify for the Community Cup, while the runners-up will need to go through the subsequent qualifying process).

The team will host Boksburg Rugby Club at home on Saturday, July 4, and are, on paper, expected to emerge victorious over their visitors.
