Kickboxing tourney is a knock-out

The annual Great North 2 kickboxing tournament, hosted by Xtreme Kickboxing Technologies (XKT), was held at the Brakpan Indoor Sports Centre on Saturday, August 29.

Fighters from kickboxing clubs from all over the province flocked to Brakpan for the tournament which was, according to XKT president and tournament director shihan Raymond Phillips, extremely successful.

“It was the biggest tournament we have had,” he said.

“There were well over 300 fighters taking part, as well as spectators and families.”

So popular was the event that even the weigh-in, on Friday night, had to be extended by an additional hour and a half.

Despite the hordes of people, Phillips commented that the tournament was completed in record time and that the various floors finished at around the same time.

“It is a positive sign that the sport is growing,” he said.

“Kickboxing will never die out, as people love stand-up combat sports.

“There is always action, always something happening in the sport.”
