Tiny Titans put it all on the line
The martial arts discipline of grappling was also a new introduction to the programme.
That old favourite on the junior kickboxing calendar, Clash of the Tiny Titans, returned to the Brakpan Indoor Sport Centre on Saturday, April 8.
The event, organised by Brakpan’s renowned kickboxing instructor and former world champion and president of Xtreme Kickboxing Technologies (XKT) Raymond “The Whip” Phillips, is regarded as one of the largest junior kickboxing tournaments on the continent.
Close on 100 eager young kickboxing students (15 years old and younger), from around South Africa, gathered at the centre to take each other on in various styles and semi and light contact fights.
The martial arts discipline of grappling was also a new introduction to the programme.
Phillips said that the event was, surprisingly, a much huger success than anticipated, considering that it fell over a school holiday weekend.
“It was a good turnout and the feedback we received afterwards was positive,” he said.
He added that he is working on a kickboxing youth development programme for disadvantaged youths from all walks of life and hopes to get backing from local government in order to grow the sport.
“I do not think the sport of kickboxing will ever die, but it certainly does have dips in growth,” said Phillips.
He believes that the introduction of grappling to his gym and to tournament programmes will help develop the mixed martial artists of the future.
