Jarvis selected for Italian job

Five of the country’s most promising young golfing talents will travel to Europe in early September to represent South Africa in the 12th Reply Italian International u-16 Championship.

State Mines junior Casey Jarvis will be one of them after being named by the South African Golf Association (SAGA) alongside Martin Vorster, Yurav Premlall, Samuel Simpson and Kian Rose to fly the national flag at this prestigious international tournament from September 4 to 6.

Jarvis is the reigning England Boys’ u-14 champion and won the Nomads South Africa Boys’ u-15 title in January.

In July, the State Mines junior picked up his third Nomads South Africa Boys’ title when he came from behind at Middelburg Country Club to win the Nomads SA Boys u-17 Championship.

The quintet will challenge for the Teodoro Soldati Trophy in the 72-hole individual competition, while three of the juniors will be nominated to represent South Africa in the 36-hole Nation’s Trophy team event, which is played concurrently with the first two rounds of the stroke play championship.

“Historically, we’ve sent four juniors to Italy since the inception of the championship in 2007,” said South African Golf Association president Geoff Taylor.

“Thanks to funding from the GolfRSA National Squad, we are able to raise the number to five this year.

“International competitive experience is vital to advance and develop the skills of our junior golfers and we are extremely pleased to give five juniors the chance to participate in this highly-rated junior international championship.”

GolfRSA CEO Grant Hepburn said the decision to increase the number of participants was motivated by the recent international success of the GolfRSA National Squad.

The Italian International u-16 Championship features 144 juniors from more than 20 countries.

The field for this year’s event includes representation from Italy, South Africa, England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Korea, Estonia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Spain, Morocco, Mauritius, Norway, Sweden, Iceland and Denmark.
