Nineteen-year-old Woest headed to the third World Cup

Woest has already played in two world championship tournaments.

Brakpan’s Karin Woest may be only 19 but she will be one of the more experienced players at next year’s u-21 Action Cricket World Cup in Australia.

Woest has already played in two world championship tournaments, the u-18 and u-21 so going overseas to show off her talent is nothing new to her.

“I’ve been to Australia and Dubai and now I’m going back to Australia,” she told the Brakpan Herald.

“It has been a good experience. You learn a lot and get to know a lot of different people. You learn about other countries and see different people, cultures and traditions.”

The youngster remembers the first time she was selected for the South African team.

“I don’t think it took me by surprise but it takes a lot of hard work and dedication. If you don’t work hard you are not going to achieve your goals,” she said.

“It takes a lot of practise, mental fitness and physical fitness. There are a lot of things that go into it. Your mind has to be right. You can be one of the best players but if you don’t have the right mindset it’s not going to work,” said Woest.

Although the World Cup is a junior tournament, the Brakpan star plays a lot against senior players and at times against men.

“I still play socially with them (men),” she says.

“It improves my game because men are a lot stronger and when it comes to bowling they are faster so that helps me as well. I practise with older ladies to help with my mindset.”

Woest dreams of one day playing for the open women’s squad.

With this being her third World Cup, Woest will be expected to guide some of the less experienced players in Australia.

“There are girls in the team who are aged 13 and 14. So I will have to guide them as they will be overseas and away from their parents for two to three weeks. I have to comfort them in that time frame,” she says.
