Carnival swimmers on a roll

Local swimmers bring home medals.

Carnival Aquatics’ swimmers have been hard at work as they have been putting on impressive performances lately.

This past weekend they showed off their skills in Jeffreys Bay and Pretoria.

Fourteen-year-old Tatum Havenga took part in her first South African Open Water National Championships in Jeffreys Bay.

She was in action after qualifying from the Eastern Gauteng Series where she eased passed the qualification time of 50 minutes.

She did the 3km qualifying race in 47:17.

Her time on Saturday was even better as she swam the event in 46:20.

“It was so hard because everyone swims at the same pace,” the youngster said when asked about her first national race.

Her clubmates were in action at the Aquatics Gauteng Level 1 competition in Pretoria.

Michael Nicolaou came home with a gold medal (200m freestyle), silver medal (200m individual medley) and bronze medal (100m freestyle) in the u-14 age group.

“I was very happy with my races, especially the 200m IM (individual medley) because I wasn’t expecting to be placed in that race,” he said.

Emma-Joy MacIntosh brought home five gold medals (200m freestyle, 50m freestyle, 100m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 100m backstroke) in the age 17 and over category.

“It was good, very tough, but it was good. I enjoyed all my races,” she said.

Although MacIntosh was impressive in the pool, she plans to focus more on the open water competitions.

Araya de Waal was the club’s other medal winner.

She brought home two silver medals (50m freestyle and 50m butterfly) in the u-11 category.

“The first race I was so nervous I just wanted to get it over and done with but the second one went a little smoothly,” she told the Herald.
