Brakpan looks ahead
South African Rugby recently announced that it will be doing away with the u-20 competition and replacing it with the u-21 teams.
In 2019, Brakpan Rugby Club’s u-20 side went all the way to the finals of the Valke League. The youngsters who played in that team are still with the club, looking to make an impact.
South African Rugby recently announced it will be doing away with the u-20 competition and replacing it with the u-21 teams.
Brakpan has decided that in 2022, it will also have an u-23 side instead of the former second team.
“We feel this is the better way to manage the young guys,” said club chairperson Harry Nieuwenhuis.
“We want to prepare them for first-team rugby. We have a really talented group of players from 2019, and 95% of them are still available for us.”
The club has started with pre-season training. It had its first session on Thursday.
“We are going to have pre-season training until December 15 and then get back in the first week of January,” said the chairperson.
Nieuwenhuis is optimistic, hoping their plans will not be hampered by the pandemic. The club has seen the virus interrupt the last two seasons.
This has also stopped the club from having its centenary year celebrations, which were meant to happen this year.
Those celebrations have now been planned for 2022.
“Hopefully, things will go back to normal,” said Nieuwenhuis.
