Speedsters arrested

A 27-year-old man travelling in a Mercedes Benz was arrested by the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department on Sunday morning, last week, for clocking 142km/h in a 80km/h zone.

According to EMPD spokesperson Chief Supt Wilfred Kgasago, the man, who claimed he was rushing to pick up his cousin, was nabbed on the R23 between Rangeview Road and Airport Drive at about 8am.

“Ten speedsters were arrested on this stretch of road between 5am and 8am, when caught doing speeds of between 117km/h and 158km/h,” he said.

On Friday and Saturday morning, last week, the EMPD arrested 14 drivers for excessive speeding along the same stretch of road.

“All the arrested speedsters were released on bail of R500 and are expected to appear in court soon to face charges of reckless and negligent driving,” added Kgasago.
