Brakpan preparing for battle

With Brakpan Rugby Club’s first team securing qualification to the 2014 Cell C Community Cup, last year, the club will, for the first time since 1975, field two first teams.

The club have revived the “Lilywhites” team that last played in the early ’70s to participate in the Assupol League that gets underway on March 1, while the Community Cup team will get their tournament underway on March 8.

The Lilywhites will be coached by Nico Heyns and will play four games in the Assupol League (twice at home and twice away from home).

All the club’s teams started training on Tuesday, January 7, and players who would like to join the club are urged to do so as soon as possible, particularly u-19 and u-21 players.

Both teams will play against some extremely strong sides before both tournaments begin with a match between the Community Cup team and the Valke’s Vodacom Cup team, on Saturday, February 22, the pre-season fixture that stands out the most.

Brakpan mopped the floor with the Valke within 40 minutes in last year’s pre-season encounter and will be aiming to pull off the same result this time round.

The Community Cup team and the Assupol League team will play each other on Saturday, January 15.

The Panne have also recruited former PUK and Roodepoort flanker Wesley Pretorius, as well as former Valke flanker Uwe Sauer.

  • Brakpan Rugby Club will hold their annual general meeting at 7pm on January 29, in the clubhouse at Bosman Stadium.
