Adopt-A-Cop initiative boosts safety at Brakpan High School camp

With SAPS and CPF patrollers on duty, learners enjoyed a well-protected camping experience on school grounds.

Brakpan police and CPF members ensured a safe experience for Brakpan High School learners during a drill squad camp from March 27 to 31, where the learners camped on the school grounds.

The camp was led by teacher and drill leader Ursula Kheswa, with some Grade 12 learners assisting.
Brakpan SAPS social crime prevention and communications officer Constable Audrey Buthelezi, who is the school’s Adopt-A-Cop campaign officer, arranged evening patrols and static visibility throughout the duration of the camp.

Together with CPF patrollers, the camping site was safely secured in the evenings. Buthelezi explained that Adopt-A-Cop is a SAPS initiative aimed at strengthening cooperation with local schools.

“The main objective is to support visible policing and crime prevention, to build trust in the community, and to improve safety and service delivery in identified areas,” she said.

“The Adopt-A-Cop initiative forms part of the SAPS’ broader efforts to tackle issues such as bullying, dangerous weapons, drugs, substance abuse, ill discipline, and gangsterism in schools.

“Creating awareness, engaging parents, providing safety tips, and conducting school visits are some of the vast activities performed to support local schools.

“This SAPS initiative promotes safe and orderly school environments.”

Buthelezi added that no criminal activities were reported at the school during the camp. Kheswa thanked the law enforcement officers for their presence, stating it made a significant difference.
