Community invited to sleep outdoors for awareness at Tutela Family Care Brakpan initiative

Beyond creating awareness of the circumstances of many of Tutela's beneficiaries, the event aims to collect donations to help them.

Tutela Family Care Brakpan is holding a “Sleep in a Box” campaign on the night of June 5 to create awareness of the circumstances faced by many of the families they assist.

The event starts at 18:00 in the parking lot of Tutela’s offices at 71 Victoria Avenue in Brakpan.

In addition, they are collecting blankets, clothes and food items for the next morning, when they will be distributing these items to some of their beneficiaries.

“The night is meant to create awareness of how many people aren’t privileged enough to have a roof over their heads, food or clothes,” said Naomi Mostert, administrative worker for Tutela.

The winter project the following day will serve about 150 to 200 people, aided by a collection drive held by the NG Kerk Dalpark Kaleo.

Clr Riaan van Zyl will be participating in the campaign, and is challenging business owners and other councillors to join him and spread the word to their clients and constituents.

He asks the public to bring items like blankets, pillows, jackets, scarves, hats and food items to “make his stay more comfortable,” which will go to Tutela afterwards.

“Not everyone in town knows about us,” said Naomi. “With help and influence, we hope to reach more people.”

Anyone can participate – bring only your contribution, a flask of coffee and a sandwich, as well as the box you will be sleeping in.

“We hope people buy in and we make a huge success of it.

“One of our main goals is to collect donations to help with making food parcels for children who are reliant on school feeding schemes, for when December holidays start and they no longer have access,” Naomi explained.

To participate, contact Naomi on 082 887 4783.
