Mwahla makes it three in a row at Colgate Race

He clocked a personal best 49:00 to win his third consecutive men's 15km race.

Kabelo Mwahla etched his name into the history books with a commanding third consecutive victory at the Colgate Race 15km at Boksburg City Stadium on May 3.

The Qhubeka AC runner delivered a statement performance, clocking a personal best 49:00 to slice 42 seconds off his previous mark of 49:42 set at last year’s race, which had already improved on his 50:27 winning time from his 2024 debut.

“I’m very happy. I worked hard, and I have at least created history for myself. I was targeting sub-50 minutes and ended up clocking 49 minutes flat, which is also a PB,” he said.

Mwahla wasted no time asserting control, surging to the front from the gun before stretching the field along Jubilee Road.

He powered up the gradual incline past the Parkrand Estate entrance and never looked back, shifting gears to tighten his grip on the race.

Despite a competitive field that included Waterfall AC’s Kabelo Sefali, Amo Shenxane of Lesedi AC, and Thato Ndlozi, the Villa Liza resident remained untroubled.

Even the heat at the Unilever turn in Boksburg East proved a minor obstacle as he cruised to the finish unchallenged.

Sefali crossed the line 1:30 behind in 50:30 to claim second place, while Ndlozi followed a further 1:53 adrift in third. The victory was about more than just another win for Mwahla. It was redemption.

“My mindset was to win and defend at least one title I claimed last year. I couldn’t defend the 16km at the Edenvale Marathon or the half-marathon at Carnival City, finishing second in both. It was a must to defend this one, so I went all out,” he said.

He also praised race director Caronn Harris and the hosts, Boksburg Athletic Club, for delivering a well-organised event.

“The race had marshals everywhere. I’ve never experienced any challenges here since my debut. There’s a lead car and a bicycle seconding the leaders, and the cyclist assisted me very well.”

Looking ahead, Mwahla will shift focus to his first cross-country season before returning to road racing in September.
