A church in Khutsong is extending the spirit of Mandela Day beyond the annual celebration by launching a weekly community feeding scheme to support vulnerable residents.

St. Saviour’s Anglican Church in the Tswana Section officially launched the initiative on July 17, intentionally aligning it with the national Mandela Day celebrations. The project reflects the church’s commitment to making “Mandela Day every day” by turning faith into practical action in the fight against poverty.

The programme began on Friday, but from now on the church will serve hot meals every Thursday at 13:00 on the church grounds.

According to church representatives, the initiative is inspired by Matthew 25:35, which reads: “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat.”

Although the feeding scheme currently operates once a week, the parish hopes to expand it into a daily service.

“Our ultimate goal is to secure enough resources and volunteers to run the programme throughout the week,” a church representative said.

The church is calling on the Khutsong community, local businesses and other stakeholders to support the initiative through food donations, financial contributions or by volunteering their time.
