Water leak in Carletonville causes dangerous conditions at busy intersection

The water leaks can also cause sinkholes, which have occurred in this particular area before.

The fact that the Merafong City Local Municipality is not monitoring water leaks in Carletonville has again led to dangerous conditions at a busy crossing.

Water was leaking this week again from the corner of Talc Street where it joins Dolomite Drive.

By Monday the sidewalk was soggy and some of the water was streaming down Dolomite. This poses a danger to motorists wanting to turn into Dolomite Drive. The leaking water has made the reeds at the Talc Street corner grow so long that one cannot see oncoming vehicles in Dolomite Drive unless you drive over the stop. Although this hazard has been a recurring problem at this crossing, the municipality is not monitoring it.

To make matters worse, the leaking water can lead to sinkholes, to which this particular area of Carletonville is prone. The water leak also wastes water during a time when Rand Water has placed water restrictions on municipalities. This restriction is due to a water shortage as well as the municipality’s inability to pay its account, a large percentage of which is made up of water lost during leaks.

Although the Herald took the matter to the municipality’s marketing and communication manager, Temba Fezani, on Monday, he did not reply.
