Family shocked by elderly patient’s mysterious bruises after Carletonville Hospital treatment
Carletonville Hospital is investigating the incident.

The family of an elderly patient was shocked by the condition of the granny when she returned home after being treated in Carletonville Hospital.
According to the family of Elizabeth Fosa (87) from Khutsong South, she was taken to Carletonville Hospital by ambulance after she struggled to breathe.
A family member went to check on her every day and made sure that she was bathed and that she ate.
When Fosa was released from Carletonville Hospital on February 25, her family noticed that she had huge dark bruises on her left thigh, and the inside of both her thighs was also completely covered in bruises.
“I went to pick her up and was shocked by how she looked. None of the staff could answer what caused them,” the family member said.
Fosa was still bruised when the Herald visited the family more than a week after her release.
Unfortunately, the granny cannot speak, so she cannot say what happened to her.
The Herald took the issue to Carletonville Hospital’s communication officer, Matabo Letsoalo, and the hospital then issued a formal response.
“Carletonville District Hospital acknowledges receipt of your media enquiry and we have since contacted the family as per our complaints management processes in the hospital. We are currently investigating the allegations raised by the family, and a redress meeting will be arranged with the family as soon as investigations are completed.”
“The operational manager for the ward in which the patient was admitted had an opportunity to communicate with the patient’s daughter when she was in the hospital regarding the condition of the patient prior to her discharge.”
“Subsequent to that, the family was contacted on the 27th February 2025 regarding the patient’s next appointment in the hospital, which is to take place in April according to patient records.”
“The hospital encourages the community of Merafong City Local Municipality to continue raising their concerns or complaints with operational managers of the units they visited.”
“Hospital Management is at all times committed to listening and address patients’ concerns on the spot,” the hospital responded.
