Members of the police in Wedela together with other officials reached out to a daycare centre in town this week.

According to social crime officer Sergeant Zikhona Sifuba, members of the SAPS, Green Door ambassadors dealing with gender-based violence, the CPF, Youth Desk, and the Department of Health took part in the action on October 20.

The group arrived at the Little Explorer Day Care Centre at approximately 10:00.

During the session, members were allowed to speak to the little ones, and Sifuba took the time to talk to them about body awareness and personal safety.

The children were taught the importance of reporting any situation where someone touches their body inappropriately, especially if someone touches their private parts. They were also reminded never to take anything from strangers or to engage in conversation with people they don’t know.

Sifuba emphasised that if they ever feel unsafe or scared, they should speak to a trusted adult immediately. Additionally, the children were encouraged to report any incidents of theft or suspicious behaviour they may witness.

The talk aimed to empower the young ones with the knowledge and confidence to protect themselves and seek help when needed. They were also taught about rape.

The law enforcers also distributed pamphlets with the police’s new land line numbers as well as the contact numbers of various police officers, including that of the Wedela Station Commander, Captain Wayne Pestana.
