Merafong Municipality under fire over illegal posters flooding Carletonville CBD

Residents question enforcement as illegal medical advertising remains plastered across lamp poles and municipal property in Flint Street and surrounding areas.

The Merafong City Local Municipality says that it is taking action against people putting up illegal posters in the Carletonville CBD.

Although the municipality previously removed the illegal posters put up against lamp poles, electricity boxes and dustbins, this does not seem to be done anymore.

In Flint Street, for instance, there are almost no lamp poles or electricity boxes that do not have posters on them.

Almost all the posters are for illegal medical procedures. Many of the posters are right across the street from the municipal offices.

There are, however, also posters stuck on municipal property in various other streets in the same area. The Herald visited the area several times during the past months, but there is no sign that the posters are being removed. Although these posters stay in place, the municipality charges other legitimate businesses to put posters against lamp poles in town.

Because of this, the Herald asked the municipality’s marketing and communication manager, Temba Fezani, about the issue.

“Illegal advertising signs and posters are not acceptable, and both EDP and Public Safety Departments are enforcing the municipal by-laws against any contravention in that regard. Weekly, the Painting Section is removing such posters placed in contravention of the municipal by-laws. We are attending to this immoral behaviour for our community,” he answered. |
