Merafong fails to secure crossing

The municipality do not seem to care that accidents can occur because of their negligence.

After over two months, the Merafong City Local Municipality has still not painted traffic signs at a dangerous corner in Fochville. The Herald contacted the municipality on 11 March after a near accident at the corners of Bosman and Steyn Streets. The primary cause was the absence of traffic signs on any of the four corners at the crossing to show which drivers must stop and who may go.

By this week, the municipality had done nothing about the problem. There are also no stop or traffic signs at the crossing.

Worse still, there are also several dangerous potholes at the crossing. These have not been attended to but, instead, have become worse. In addition, there is also a loose maintenance hole cover on the road surface where motorists coming from the direction of Munt Street turn left onto Bosman Street.

“The municipality is awaiting the material to properly mark the crossing and other areas within the Merafong jurisdiction. As soon as the material is available, we will mark all the areas,” the municipal marketing and communications manager, Mr Temba Fezani, replied on 12 March.

Although the municipality has cut some long grass that obscured oncoming traffic at the corner since the previous article, the Herald received no further feedback.
