Writers Awards shine despite venue double-booking by Merafong Municipality
Organisers have requested accountability to prevent future incidents.
An event organised in the Carletonville Civic Centre continued on Saturday despite being disrupted by a double-booking by the Merafong City Local Municipality.
According to the organiser, Glad Zitha of Majestic Media Collectives, the event was set to be a memorable celebration of South Africa’s literary and creative excellence. However, the day was unexpectedly disrupted due to a double-booking by the local municipality, resulting in a clash between two events at the same venue.
Despite the setback, the Writers Awards successfully brought together an inspiring assembly of writers, authors, journalists, and media professionals from across the country, with some travelling from as far as Cape Town. Media houses Soweto TV and Gaut TV weresome of the media present to capture the significance of the moment.
The ceremony honoured notable names, including Dr. Andile Mbatha, as well as the nationally recognised author and literary treasure, Sidney Seromo. The event was also graced by celebrated gospel sensation Godfrey Mahlangu, whose presence added beauty to the occasion.
Actress Helena Peterson delivered an impactful speech, while renowned author and TV presenter Xoli KaMadlala offered a powerful presentation.
“The atmosphere was filled with elegance, sophistication, and I shared a passion for the arts. However, due to the municipality’s scheduling oversight, the noise and high volume from the other event posed significant disruptions throughout the programme,” lamented Zitha.
“Despite the clash and all the challenges, we pushed through,” said the founder, Glad Zitha. “Not everything went as planned or envisioned, but it was still a beautiful success — full of honour and attended by prestigious individuals who respected and followed the theme. We launched something meaningful, and next year we are going even higher.”
Following the incident, Zitha has submitted a formal letter of review to the Merafong City Municipality, requesting that the matter be addressed to ensure such disruptions do not occur in the future. The Herald also asked the municipality about the double-booking, but no response was received by printing time.
