Kasi Jam sessions unite and empower local artists in Khutsong

The weekly music and talent platform at Merafong 360 Radio is creating opportunities for musicians, comedians and creatives across Merafong.

The series of Kasi Jam Sessions has been taking place since February this year on Thursdays at Merafong 360 Radio, based in Khutsong. The platform is hosted by radio presenter KGEE on “The Kreative Korner,” a show focused on profiling various local artists as well as showcasing different talented people in one space, forging unplanned collaborations to unite artists. It has played an instrumental role in keeping local artists active.

Different groups and individual rappers and singers have participated, such as Mahavatar and his crew, Dollar Thugs, Straata Academy, Danger Maqhuzu from Wedela, and singers such as Cristal J, Monde Mgquba, Tee Jay Omar and Thabisa Hange, as well as gospel artist Jonkie Jay. Recently, live drummer Kelvin Skrrr performed alongside reggae artist Jah Sabbatical, soulful house singer Blaq Throne and hip hop artist Stevie G.

The platform continues to attract more talented people and has also hosted local comedians Hloni Hlonza and Ke Boike from the Comedy Alliance.

Currently, the Kasi Jam Session team is collaborating with Kasikonnekt, a company based in Johannesburg that focuses on creating online profiles for local artists to encourage their digital presence. The company designed the Kasi Jam Session logo and website free of charge to support the positive initiative.

The Kasi Jam Session team is also in the process of hosting the first event born from the sessions, called the Kasi Jam Show, where all the artists who have showcased their talents on the radio show will be given the opportunity to present their work on stage.

The Kasi Jam Shows are intended to become a movement that inspires local artists while also ensuring sustainability and livelihood opportunities for local creatives and entrepreneurs.
