Merafong City LFA kicks off 2026 Junior League with 49 teams
Youth football is thriving across Merafong as the local football association launches its 2026 Junior League and plans new U19 and indoor football competitions.
The Merafong City Local Football Association (LFA) has officially launched its 2026 Junior League as part of its ongoing commitment to nurturing young sporting talent and creating clear pathways for players across the municipality.
According to the association’s chairperson, Mbuyiselo Zuwani, the junior league is already well underway for some. Teams in Stream C, which include sides from Fochville, are already playing their third week of fixtures.
The other streams are preparing to join the action very soon. Stream A for Khutsong, Stream B for Carletonville, Blybank and rural areas, and Stream D for Wedela and the mining areas are all scheduled to start their league matches on July 20. This season, the Merafong City LFA is overseeing 49 teams competing across the U11, U13, U15, and U17 age categories.
“The Association believes that investing in youth football is essential for nurturing talent, instilling discipline and creating positive opportunities for young people,” emphasised Zuwani.
The association is also looking to expand its reach by consulting with affiliated clubs about creating a new U19 league.
This consultation process will help determine the level of interest and the best format for the competition, with a formal announcement expected once discussions are finalised. In addition to youth development, the association plans to introduce an adult indoor football, or futsal, league.
Designed for both men and women, this initiative aims to promote healthy lifestyles, encourage social cohesion, and offer a fun, inclusive recreational platform across the municipality.
To help local clubs get involved, several area co-ordinators have been appointed.
Fofo Sekgakweng is available to support teams in Khutsong, while Thabonyane Maoto is assisting clubs in Wedela, the mining areas, Carletonville, Blybank, and rural areas.
Tsholofelo Phato is the contact for teams in the Fochville area. Clubs and individuals who want to join the upcoming U19 league, the indoor football league, or affiliate with the Merafong City LFA are warmly invited to get in touch.
For all membership enquiries, please contact the secretary of the association, Tsholofelo Phato, on 071 399 5474 or send an email to [email protected].
