Get to know you possible future Merafong mayors: Part 2

The Carletonville Herald this week invited political parties to submit information on their candidates for the position of executive mayor of the Merafong City Local Municipality.

Carlos Rebelo
Party: DA

Background:
For 37 years, people in Carletonville knew that they could find Carlos Rebelo at Blockbusters, the shop that he had opened in 1988 after arriving in Carletonville from Johannesburg.

Despite the fact that most video shops disappeared Blockbusters kept growing until it finally closed in 2025. As a ward councillor, his work has taken him into the less glamorous corners of municipal life: leaking pipes, damaged roads, illegal dumping, sinkholes, neglected facilities, unpaid municipal accounts and infrastructure stripped by criminals.

More recently, he has challenged the municipality over large unpaid accounts and continued reporting water leaks in his ward. Restore law and order. His pledges are to fix what you can see first, protect every rand of public money to tell the truth, remain accessible, serve every resident fairly and be accountable.
