Smithathlons shine at D2

Several athletes of the Smithathlons Athletics Club in Carletonville recently excelled at the D2 district athletics championships.

The D2 champion-ship for primary schools took place on 20 February and the event for secondary schools on 21 February at Hoërskool Noordheuwel in Krugersdorp.
Rorisang Motsumi of Carleton Jones High School competed in the 100 and 200 m sprints. He came third in the 200 m and fourth in the 100 m. Mvula Sekgobele of Carletonville High School took part in the 110 m hurdles, but unfortunately fell during the race and could not complete it.
“He was just a split second behind the winner in the 200 m,” says the club’s coach, the well-known Annatjie Smith.
It was the club’s primary school athletes who really shone, however.
Mikayla Smith got first places in the u.10 high jump, 80 m and 100 m items for girls, while Jayden Dreyer, also u.10, came third in the 1,200 m. Both earned their Gauteng West colours and now proceed to the South Gauteng championship that will take place at Ruimsig again, on 13 and 14 March. This is the last event before the SA’s that will be held in Pietermaritzburg.
“The children practise very hard and we wish them luck for the next event. We know they will do well,” Smith told the Herald.
