Double life sentences for dangerous criminals

Three gets double life plus 15 years for robbery, rape and housebreaking.

Three criminals who broke into a house in Kokosi and then continued to rob and rape received heavy sentences recently.

Bongani Shasha (25), Alfred Sibeko (35) and Andries Mokoena (44) struck terror at a home in Kokosi on 11 August 2018.

They arrived at a house on Lerato Street at approximately 02:00 and started stealing almost all the electrical equipment, clothing and groceries inside. When the homeowner’s wife arrived, they grabbed her and forced her into the house.

The robbers took the keys to the house and car, removed the stolen goods and loaded them into her car. They also raped her.

Luckily, the police arrested the three, all Lesotho nationals, in Wedela shortly afterwards. A member of the police’s trio task team, Sgt Jabulani Ngobeni, investigated the case and ensured the criminals went to trial to account for their crimes.

They appeared in the Carletonville regional court before Magistrate Jan Steyn on 20 February. Shasha, Sibeko and Mokoena each faced charges of housebreaking with the intent to rob, robbery with aggravating circumstances, and rape.

They were found guilty on all three charges against them, and each was sentenced to 15 years for housebreaking. They also received life sentences for the robbery with aggravating circumstances and rape charges.

Justice in the case was handed down in the Oberholzer Regional Court on 20 February.
