Rand Water answers about messages

Rand Water says it is only cutting water because of the weather.

Rand Water maintains that it is only cutting Merafong’s water due to the climate conditions.

Messages (allegedly between staff of the Merafong City Local Municipality) were circulated this morning (28 February 2024) that Rand Water has cut out water supply by 70% without warning due to the municipality not paying its outstanding money to Rand Water.

Due to the importance of this issue, the Herald asked both Rand Water and the municipality about it this morning.

The newspaper just received an answer from Rand Water’s spokesperson, Makenosi Maroo.

“Rand Water implements curtailment to all customers that it supplies in order to manage high consumption due to high temperatures and less rain,” says Maroo.

“Curtailment means reduction not no supply across all customers,” he added.

According to Rand Water it is not currently experiencing any water supply challenges.

According to information shared by opposition party councillors attending today’s council meeting the municipality is in the process of paying Rand Water some of its outstanding water account. It is not sure how much is being paid today though.

Apparently, the municipality will send out a press release about the matter soon.

The municipality’s Marketing and Communications Manager, Mr Temba Fezani, has not answered questions about the matter.
