ABRAM NGONDO “Vacant houses are a threat. People kill, commit crimes and smoke drugs in those houses. It’s left unattended and becomes a problem for surrounding neighbours.”

We asked local residents if they thought vacant houses in the South are a threat to the community. Here are some responses.

THEMBINKOSI MTOLO “I don’t like them. Vacant houses are just a nest for corruption in the South. The police needs to get rid of it. They only take it seriously when there is mob justice.”
BEVE FERREIRA “It’s a threat when you have unoccupied homes, homeless and a country with high crime. People become volatile, emotional, at risk and the area becomes unpredictable.”
NYOMBIZETHO SHABANGU “It’s a threat when people are squatting with no legal documents. This is how crime and corruption begins.”
BRENDA MOLOI “It’s a danger to the community when houses are operated illegally. The government should hunt those places and close it down because it is destroying our country.”
