Joburg shaken up as tremor hits Gauteng

An earthquake tremor believed to measure 4.2 on the Richter scale shook this Friday morning, July 30.

Residents in parts of Gauteng said that they woke up to what felt like an earthquake.

The aftershocks were felt far and wide, especially on the East Rand, including Boksburg, Pretoria and Johannesburg.

According to Alberton CPF, the council has confirmed the epicentre was recorded near Harmony’s Doornkop mine on the West Rand.

“This leads us to believe it was a strong earth tremor. We will monitor the situation and give updates if necessary. We have seen reports that it was a minor earthquake,” said Alberton CPF.

People have taken to social media networks to talk about their experiences following the tremor which is believed to have been felt across Gauteng.
