Wembley Shelter hosts tournament for social change

Sports against Drugs and Crime tournament a success.

Sanca Central Rand Alcohol and Drug Centre in Rosettenville, Moffat View Police Station, Believers Care Society (BCS) and the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation Region F recently hosted a Sports Against Drugs and Crime Tournament.

The tournament was hosted for patients recovering from substance use disorder at Bereshith Centre and for displaced people living at Wembley Shelter in Turffontein.

The purpose of the tournament was to use sports as a vehicle that encouraged mass participation in healthy recreational activities, away from criminal and risky behaviour, tackle substance abuse-related issues, encourage and introduce skills development opportunities within the community.

The programme entailed netball and soccer tournament, physical fitness activities, indigenous games, motivational and educational talks from various stakeholders such as Khulisa Social Solutions.

BCS offered free skills development training courses to displaced people from Wembley Shelter and Bereshith Centre beneficiaries.

After awarding the bursaries, Cashline Nkadimeng, the project coordinator from BCS, said, “The courses will capacitate these beneficiaries with skills, which change their unfortunate past incidents of crime, substance abuse and unemployment.”

Sphiwe Ntombela from the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation, said, “Considering the positive impact of this campaign, we look forward to making this an annual campaign with the inclusion of others who have been negatively affected by crime and substance abuse.

“We need sponsorships and community development officers. Should there be anyone who can assist, contact any of the committee members?”

Participants also received medals and the food bank donated fruit and vegetable hampers. Kgomotso Dhlamini from the Sports against Drugs and Crime Committee said, “The committee would like to thank all participants and sponsors for their generous donations.”
