Housing Department condemns fraudsters promising people RDP homes in Lufhereng
This is the second incident this year and the housing department condemns it.
Member of the Mayoral Committee for Housing in the City of Joburg, Mlungisi Mabaso, warns the public to be wary of fraudsters promising them RDP houses in Lufhereng, south of Johannesburg.
This comes as fake posters call for people, who applied for houses, to come forward and be allocated this month. It says there are 420 houses ready for allocation in Greater Lufhereng from June 20 to 30.
“This is yet another fraudulent attempt aimed at scamming and soliciting money from people who need houses. I urge the residents not to fall for it. There will be no housing allocations in Lufhereng this month,” said Mabaso.
The department is making great strides at ensuring that they provide people with decent homes and Lufhereng is one of their major projects where many residents will benefit.
“In the coming months, we will communicate with deserving beneficiaries once we are ready to allocate via official channels such as our regional offices and the housing website. I also wish to reiterate that we will not tolerate criminality in the name of the department,” said Mabaso.
This is not the first such case. In February this year, three suspects were arrested for allegedly creating fake social media accounts in MMC Mabaso’s name to solicit money from unsuspecting people who want houses.
They promised to give them RDP houses in exchange for cash. The case continues in the Hillbrow Magistrates Court.
Members of the public are urged to report fraudulent activities to the toll-free hotline on 0800 002 587 or email whistle@joburg.org.za
