Opening of the City of Johannesburg public swimming pool
Residents are urged to follow the rules at swimming pools to avoid unnecessary injuries.
The City of Johannesburg officially opened its public swimming pools for the 2022/2023 swimming season on September 1.
Of the city’s 59 pools, 35 opened on September 1 and an additional eight will open before September 15.
The city’s swimming season runs until the end of March 2023, after which the pools are closed for repairs and maintenance.
The MMC for Community Development, Ronald Harris, is adamant that the department could have done better and opened at least more than 80% of the pools. However, between October and December, an additional eight pools will open.
The normal swimming pool hours are from Monday to Friday 10:00 to 18:00 and Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to 17:00. For non-heated pools, the tariff rate is between R6 and R12. For heated pools, the tariff rate is between R8 and R14
Communities are encouraged to celebrate summer, learn how to swim, and enjoy pools. Safety of bathers is important to the city and the following safety measures will be included no pushing, no running, no glasses in the pool or deck area and no alcohol and smoking of narcotics.
The city’s pools will also offer an array of water activities like learning to swim, water aerobics, water safety and water volleyball – all in the spirit of the spring season!
Region F swimming pools which opened on September 1 include Pioneer Park (corner Rosettenville Road and 11th Street), Forest Hill (John Stephenson Road, Golf Street between Leonard Ext and Rifle Range Road), Crown Gardens (corner Ulster Crescent), Turffontein (Eastwood Street) and Moffat (corner Southern Klipriviersberg and Nephin roads).
The swimming pool opening from October to November in Region F is Southern Suburb (1 Short Street, Oakdene). Due to vandalism, stripping and major renovations Robertsham pool will not open.
