Joburg south boxing returns to Zimbabwe to facilitate a boxing course

Zimbabwean boxing course achieves a 100% pass rate with Johannesburg south boxing coach.

Manny Fernandes, a Johannesburg south boxing coach, travelled to Zimbabwe to train students and coaches.

He was nominated boxing trainer of the year in 2003 and 2005 and produced eight world champions and many South African and international boxing champions.

The CEO of the Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board, Lawrence Zimbudzana, contacted Fernandes to facilitate a coaching course on June 30, 2022, in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe because of his vast experience in boxing.

Fernandes was invited back on June 1, 2023, to facilitate a coaching course at Chinhoyi, 100km north of Harare. Chinhoyi is a rural area where they have introduced boxing at the school level, as most students and coaches are novices.

The Level One Coaching Course in Chinhoyi was an intense three-day course whereby 38 students participated in mainly practical activities, which resulted in a 100% pass rate.

The Minister of Primary and Secondary Education for Zimbabwe, Dr Evelyn Ndlovu has implemented boxing as one of the sports in the physical education curriculum education and introduced it countrywide in both primary and secondary schools.

“It was an absolute pleasure working with such dedicated students and coaches. We have formed a WhatsApp group where we share knowledge and training techniques.

“On May 28, we had a development boxing tournament at Turffontein Racecourse, and we intend to have our next tournament on August 5, also at the racecourse. This is a development programme for the boxers who want to go bigger and better.

“We would like to thank our sponsors Sean Hana from Ace Auto Salvage, Leslie Harns from LKD Electrical, and Lenard Dullisear from ITEC,” said Fernandes.
